Luke Tanzer, Managing Director

Luke is the Managing Director of RiverStone’s Europe group operations. Luke joined RiverStone in 1998 and has held a number of positions including Head of Workout, Reinsurance Director and Operations Director before his promotion to Managing Director in 2009. He has been involved in the resolution of numerous complex and challenging issues with a focus on resolving disputes and negotiating major commutation transactions. Born in Australia, Luke graduated from James Cook University, North Queensland in 1987 with a Bachelor Degree in Economics, and before moving to England he worked in commercial lending with Barclays Australia Finance Ltd in Sydney. Luke has over 25 years’ experience in the insurance industry having worked in the Claims and Placing Divisions of Alwen Hough Johnson and Sedgwick Re between 1990 and 1998.


Lorna Hemsley, Finance Director

Lorna is responsible for all finance and actuarial related matters for the RiverStone Europe group, including general accounting, reporting, treasury, planning, and taxation. Lorna joined the RiverStone Europe group in 1998 as Deputy Accountant and was appointed Head of Finance in 2003 and then Finance Director in 2008. Prior to joining the RiverStone Europe group, Lorna spent ten years at an accountancy practice where she qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1991 and gained a wide range of experience.


Mark Bannister, Operations Director

Mark is responsible for the Claims and Reinsurance Departments of RiverStone Europe. Mark joined the group as a graduate in 1994 initially in the Technical Team of Sphere Drake Underwriting Management. Mark managed the Financial Run-off Unit, the Commutations Group and the Workout and Reinsurance teams before being appointed Reinsurance Director in March 2011. In 2014 Mark moved to New Hampshire to spend two years as Vice President and member of the RiverStone US Leadership Team before returning to the UK in June 2016 as Operations Director for RiverStone Europe. Mark has completed over 500 commutations, established the RiverStone direct broking operation, resolved numerous complex run-off issues and has 22 years of both live and run-off experience.


Tony Tilley, Reinsurance Director

Tony joined the group in 1991 after graduating from Brighton University with a BSc in Combined Sciences (mathematics and physics). Initially working for Sphere Drake Underwriting Management in the Technical Services team, he has held various management positions including Head of Special Projects and Lloyd’s Run-off Manager. Tony was heavily involved in the successful PA spiral litigation between Sphere Drake and Stirling Cooke Brown/EIU and has over 25 years of both live and run-off experience in both the company and Lloyd’s market. He is now the Reinsurance Director for RiverStone Management Limited, responsible for all reinsurance matters, including technical reinsurance issuance, credit control and commutation activity. Additionally, Tony heads up the acquisition activity for the RiverStone Europe Group.


Stephen Roberts, Claims Director 

Stephen joined the RiverStone Europe group in 2012 as Claims Director of the UK Division of RiverStone Insurance Limited, headed up the acquisition and business development team until 2015 and was promoted to Group Director of Claims with effect from March 2016. Stephen is ACII qualified, and is appointed to the Boards of RiverStone Management Limited and of IRLA, the Insurance and Reinsurance Legacy Association. Stephen also sits on the Board of the Claims Faculty of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Prior to joining the RiverStone Europe group Stephen was with Brit Insurance for 10 years, most recently as Head of UK Claims. Stephen has experience dealing with significant 1st and third party claims in motor, property, liability, property and professional classes with previous management and claims roles held at Lloyd’s Syndicates 2525, 1156 and 386. Stephen helped found and was a co-owner of Specialist Liability Insurance Limited, a loss adjusting company and began his insurance career in 1983 with the Lloyd’s broker Leslie & Godwin.


Fraser Henry, Director, General Counsel and Company Secretary

Fraser joined the RiverStone Europe group in 2004 as a corporate solicitor and was promoted to General Counsel and Company Secretary in 2007. He has been closely involved with the RiverStone Europe groups acquisitions and company restructuring and has overseen numerous company transfers, Part VII transactions and reinsurance to close transactions in the Lloyd’s market. He was appointed to the Board of RiverStone Management Limited in 2012. Fraser attended the University of Manchester where he graduated with a BA in Economics. After 5 years working on the commercial side of the IT industry Fraser returned to university to retrain as a solicitor. He spent 4 years with DMH solicitors and 4 years with Osborne Clarke before joining the RiverStone Europe group. Since joining Fraser has been awarded an LLM in Commercial Law from Bristol University.


Adrian Masterson, Independent Non-Executive Chairman of RiverStone Insurance Limited and Independent Non-Executive Director of RiverStone Managing Agency Limited

Adrian joined the board of RiverStone Managing Agency in 2011 and is also Chairman of the board of RiverStone Insurance Limited and the Group Risk Committee. Adrian started his career as an economist with the Central Bank of Ireland followed by a treasury role with Gulf Oil in London. He then moved to Morgan Guaranty Trust Bank where he was Vice President, followed by 3 years as Director of Corporate Finance at James Crean PLC.  Since 1994 he has been Director of various companies established in Ireland by leading US, UK and European Investment banks. Adrian has a BA in Mathematics and Economics from University College, Dublin, an MSc from the London School of Economics and an MBA from Harvard University.


Tom Riddell, Independent Non-Executive Director of RiverStone Insurance Limited and Independent Non-Executive Chairman of RiverStone Insurance (UK) Limited

Tom joined the Riverstone Insurance (UK) Limited board in 2014 as an Independent Non-Executive Director and went on to be appointed as Chairman in December 2016. Tom joined the board of RiverStone Insurance Limited in 2012 and is Chairman of the Riverstone Insurance Limited Audit Committee. Tom has previously been a partner at KPMG LLP London and KPMG Sydney. He was the Scheme Administrator of English & American Insurance Company from 1998 to 2011 and the UK Scheme Administrator of the HIH group of companies from 2001 to 2011. He is also Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Asta Managing Agency Limited, formerly Whittington Capital Management Ltd. Tom is a Chartered Accountant with extensive experience in corporate restructuring and insolvency.


Kalpana Shah, Independent Non-Executive Chairman of RiverStone Managing Agency Limited and Independent Non-Executive Director of RiverStone Insurance (UK) Limited

Kalpana joined the boards of RiverStone Insurance (UK) Limited and RiverStone Managing Agency Limited in April 2016 and was appointed as the Chair of the RiverStone Managing Agency Limited board in September 2016. Following an early career on the trading floor working in business development for the London Commodity Exchange, Kalpana started her insurance career as deputy to the director of underwriting at Groupama Gan. She served at Hiscox for 19 years where she was Group Chief Actuary and Partner. She has worked on a number of international industry and regulatory committees. In 2014, as Chair of the Actuarial Function working group for the London Market Association she produced the first widely used practical guidance for Chief Actuaries responsible for meeting the requirements of the new regulatory insurance framework. Over the years she has worked on various working groups for the Bank of England, Lloyd's of London and the Bermuda Monetary Authority on the implementation of Solvency II. She is also Independent Non-Executive Director of Asta Managing Agency Limited, formerly Whittington Capital Management Ltd.

Kalpana was recently included in the inaugural UPstanding list of the Financial Times featuring 100 UK and US executives who have reached senior roles in business whilst also fighting discrimination and championing ethnic diversity and inclusion.


Colin Czapiewski, Independent Non-Executive Director of RiverStone Insurance Limited

Colin joined the board of RiverStone Insurance Limited in April 2016. Colin also holds an external Independent Non-Executive Director role for a Lloyd’s managing agency, where he chairs several board committees, and is a self-employed consultant advising on actuarial and risk management matters. He became a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1984. Colin commenced his career as an actuarial trainee at Prudential Assurance Company and went on to become the appointed actuary for Terra Nova Insurance Company in 1985. In 1993, Colin joined Lane, Clark & Peacock as Partner and Head of Insurance and Risk Management, before becoming self-employed in 2005. Colin has also served on the boards a number of UK and international professional bodies. 


Jaz Saggu, Independent Non-Executive Director of RiverStone Insurance (UK) Limited

Jaz joined the board of RiverStone Insurance (UK) Limited in April 2016.  Jaz’s background is in building international insurance businesses, turnarounds and transformational leadership, having previously served as a Director at Aviva Plc and NPG Wealth Management (a JC Flowers PE Company), and Group Chief Operating Officer at Pro Plc.  Jaz currently works at Willis Towers Watson as an Executive Director, and also has experience in financial services gained at GE Money as Global Chief Operating Officer, and in senior executives roles at Prudential Plc, Benfield Plc and Halifax Plc.  Jaz has considerable experience as a Non-Executive Director and a Trustee for a number of charitable and commercial organisations including university Board of Governors.  He has an MBA from Cranfield School of Management as well as an MSc and PhD in Aircraft Design from Cranfield University.  Jaz has also participated in the Senior Executive Programmes at Templeton College and Saïd Business School, Oxford University.  He has previously held a Visiting Professorship in change management.
