Who we are

RiverStone Europe is the European operation of The RiverStone Group, a US-based group of insurance, reinsurance and service companies specialising in the management of legacy and run-off insurance businesses and portfolios and is an industry leader in claim resolution, reinsurance recovery and dispute resolution.

Since 1999, The RiverStone Group has been a part of the insurance and reinsurance operations of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, (Fairfax), a Canadian financial services group based in Toronto.

In total, RiverStone Europe manages in excess of $595 million in gross liabilities through its offices in Brighton and London. On a global basis, the RiverStone Group is responsible for nearly $4.1 billion in gross liabilities.

RiverStone Europe manages a variety of Lloyd’s London market and European portfolios and is experienced in the management of both reinsurance and direct business, including significant long-tail exposures. Our portfolios include:

  • continental motor reinsurance
  • property and catastrophe reinsurance
  • marine insurance including hull, cargo, P&I and specie
  • marine reinsurance
  • aviation insurance and reinsurance
  • personal accident
  • non-marine casualty reinsurance including historical liabilities such as asbestos and pollution along with newly emerging claims such as construction defect
  • US excess and surplus lines insurance

RiverStone Europe has successfully completed a number of consolidations using Part VII and other legal mechanisms and is one of only two companies to have had their Part VII transfers recognised by the U.S. under a Section 304 order. Additionally, RiverStone has participated in a number of Solvent Schemes of Arrangement of specific portfolios and has considerable expertise in addressing large and complex legal matters, as demonstrated by success in Sphere Drake Insurance vs EIU, Stirling Cooke Brown, and Others.

RiverStone has also completed a number of Lloyd’s of London reinsurance to close transactions and RiverStone Managing Agency is responsible for the management of a number of Lloyd’s syndicates.
